Shops flout ban on 'fruit' cigarettes

RETAILERS were continuing to sell fruit-flavoured cigarettes during the first day of a statewide ban on the product.
South Australia yesterday became the first state in the country to ban the cigarettes which have been widely criticised for luring young people into smoking.

Cigarette flavours include strawberry, green apple, chocolate and melon.

A survey of five randomly selected outlets which sell cigarettes revealed two still carried the now-illegal products, while a third sold flavoured cigarette papers.

Uni Students, first year dropout rate 15pc

ALMOST 15 per cent of university students drop out in their first year, a study shows.
Researchers at Monash University's Centre for the Economics of Education and Training surveyed 13,500 domestic students from 14 different universities in 2004.

They found the attrition rate, once students who changed institutions were excluded, was 13.7 per cent. This was a lower figure than indicated in previous studies, the researchers found.

Playground drug deals revealed

CHILDREN as young as 10 have been involved in playground drug deals, it has been revealed.

A grade five girl was caught by her principal trying to sell marijuana at a Victorian state school in 2003, News Limited newspapers report today.

The principal confiscated the drugs and notified the girl's parents and police.

In another case in 2002, a year five school girl with a history of “behaviour difficulties” was found intoxicated after being seen drinking on her way to school.

Meningococcal vaccine being trialled

PERTH researchers are trialling a new vaccine that could shield children from the most common form of meningococcal disease in Western Australia.

There is no vaccine available now to prevent the Meningococcal B strain of the bacteria that accounts for 80 per cent of cases in Western Australia.

But researchers from the Vaccine Trials Group at the Telethon Institute for Child Health Research and Princess Margaret Hospital for Children are hoping the vaccine they are trialling could protect against it.
